Reflection for oral presentation

Presentations have always been one of my greatest fears in school. However after going through the oral presentation, I have seen improvements in my presentation skills. I am indeed more confident now as compared to the past.

It’s a huge transition for me. Before going though this module, my presentation style would be just reading directly from my cue cards and making occasional eye contact. Now, I am able to present without any notes with me and feel more comfortable making eye contact with my audience.

Certainly, I am still not up to the standard and there are rooms for improvement. Like what brad had mentioned in the final oral presentation, I had to improve on the use of subject verb agreement in my speech and also more importantly to sound natural. I would require more oral presentation practices to improve on these two areas of weakness. Perhaps next time, I should record my own presentation to pinpoint on the mistakes.

Nonetheless, I am grateful to identify my mistakes now so that I can make changes to it in the future. It’s always better to make all the silly mistakes now cause you still have the chance to learn from it and make sure you never make the same one again.

  1. Hi Michelle,

Being in the same peer teaching group as you, I must say that you are a more confident speaker now as compared to the beginning of this course. I was greatly impressed by your final oral presentation. I vividly remembered that you started off your presentation with great energy and enthusiasm, and that caught my attention. You certainly maintained the eye contact and you were definitely engaging your audience.

Perhaps, the thing that you can improve and work on is your sentence structure. It is definitely not easy to think swiftly when we are caught in impromptu situations, but practice makes perfect. We are all still learning and I am sure we will get the hang of it someday.

  2. Hi Michelle,

I would not have guessed that you often rely on cue cards. Your presentation was memorable to me as you sounded convincing and rather confident. Although there were moments that you were searching for the right lines in your head, I do honestly feel that you had improved from your peer teaching.

I can't help you with SVA but maybe I can try to suggest something regarding your body language. Maybe it was due to my position, to me you were hiding in a corner at times and it made it hard to focus on you. Perhaps you can try using your hand gestures to draw the attention to you.

I do agree with you that this opportunity was great to identify our mistakes. Looking forward to seeing you as a more confident speaker!

  3. Hi Michelle!

Like you, I also have my fears about oral presentations. In fact I loathed them:/. But now, after the training and practices I've received from this course, it doesnt seem that scary anymore. I can see that you have more or less overcome it in your final presentation too! You sounded confident and enthusiastic overall and I was pretty impressed by your improvement. Your presentation was also better polished than the one you gave during the mock one. Congratulations on the great strides you've made in this course!:)

  4. Hi Michelle,

Nobody likes oral presentations. People usually say I seem confident, but nobody knows that I'm actually trembling when I'm up on the "stage". Its really the same adage that we have been repeating the entire semester, " Fake it til you become it". There may be times when you won't feel as nervous, and knowing exactly what to say really helps alot as well.
I can see that you have improved over the semester, between the first few lessons and the oral presentation itself. Keep up the practices and I'm sure you will do well for the FYP presentation in year 4.

    Cheers,
    Chris
P.S. I apologise again for being so mean during the interview
